 On March 19th, Hasbro’s Monopoly brand will be celebrating World Monopoly Day! Will you be celebrating too? I know my family will be breaking out one of our most favorite games Monopoly to have some fun and to celebrate this cool day. Monopoly is a game I grew up playing, it is a great game of skill and planning and luck. To celebrate World Monopoly Day, I have a very interest fact list 25 Things You Didn’t Know About Monopoly, some great history that I never knew! Very interesting to see how big a part Philadelphia was in the manufacturing of the game, I have lived in Philadelphia all of my life and I did not know this. 25 Things You Didn’t Know About Monopoly

1. The MONOPOLY brand’s official birthday is March 19, 1935 when Parker Brothers acquired the rights for the game from Charles Darrow.
2. The MONOPOLY game is currently published in over 47 languages and sold in over 114 countries.
3. Charles Darrow of Philadelphia, PA first developed the MONOPOLY game in 1933.
4. The MONOPOLY game is based on Atlantic City, N.J., U.S.A
5. The original game was made from materials from Darrow’s own home. A piece of oilcloth covered the board and the cards were handwritten.
6. The original houses and hotels were made from wooden molding scraps.
7. The original MONOPOLY die-cast tokens were inspired by Darrow’s nieces who recommended metal charms from charm bracelets be used.
8. The original game included 10 metal tokens including iron, purse, lantern, racecar, thimble, shoe, top hat, battleship, cannon and a rocking horse.
9. Darrow attempted to sell the MONOPOLY game to Parker Brothers, but was initially rejected for “52 fundamental errors” that included the game’s length, theme and complexity.
10. Darrow first manufactured and sold the MONOPOLY game in local Philadelphia department stores.
11. Following the local success of the MONOPOLY game, Parker Brothers reconsidered their initial rejection and negotiated the rights to market the game.
12. Parkers Brothers in the U.S.A. and Waddington’s in the U.K. began manufacturing and selling the MONOPOLY game in 1935.
13. Within a year of the MONOPOLY game’s release in the U.S., 35,000 copies of the game were being made each week.
14. The original MONOPOLY game sold for about $2.
15. The current standard MONOPOLY game includes eight tokens: battleship, top hat, Scottie dog, racecar, cat, T-Rex, rubber ducky, and penguin.
16. The three most-landed- on properties in the standard MONOPOLY game are Illinois Avenue, “GO” and B&O Railroad.
17. The total amount of money in a standard MONOPOLY game is $20,580.
18. The MONOPOLY game is sold in over 100,000 retail stores.
19. On record, the longest game of MONOPOLY ever played lasted 70 straight days. 
20. Under The Boardwalk: The MONOPOLY Story, a documentary about the MONOPOLY game, debuted in 2010 and won an Emmy® award.
21. In a recent study of approximately 2,000 people, nearly 50 percent of respondents reported some form of cheating during MONOPOLY gameplay, including stealing money from the bank, moving a token across multiple spaces, making up fake rules, and more.
22. This year, Hasbro launched a way to solve the game’s cheating and questionable behavior once and for all with the introduction of MONOPOLY CheatBot, an adaptation of Facebook Messenger.
23. In the fall of 2018, to give fans what they’ve been craving all along, the MONOPOLY brand is introducing the MONOPOLY CHEATERS EDITION game, where players will be encouraged to bend the rules and “cheat to win”;
24. The Official MONOPOLY brand Facebook page has over 10.7 million Facebook fans.
25. MONOPOLY Facebook fans hail from over 40 different countries.

I did grow up playing momopoly. What I love about it is it's a great game for teaching kids about money and free market of buying and selling.

I did grow up playing Monopoly and loved the friendly competition between family & friends. Even though the competition could become very competitive at times; it was loads of fun.

yes we played it as akid,,my kids played it and now the grandkids love to come to my house to play,,i have no video games only board games,,we do this to spend time together

Yes I played this game growing up with my siblings. I enjoyed it very much because it brought us close together and it was a very competitive game!

What I love most about Monopoly is the play money. It was fun as a kid playing with the money and rolling the dice. Yes, I did grow up playing Monopoly.

I love buying up every property I land on..When my husband and I were dating in our teens we had our first fight over this game when I wouldn't trade him a property and he got mad and went home with his game..lol

I've definitely been playing Monopoly since I was a kid! I love that it helps teach business in that you have to purchase something (and save up for things). And when the rent is owed you better pay!
