We are raising the Bardem with this interview. A chat with Captain Salazar, Javier Bardem from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. #PiratesLifeEvent

****Disney provided an all-expense paid trip for me to cover this great event ****

Javier Bardem is an Academy Award-winning actor that is best known for playing an insane assassin in the 2007 Coen brothers film No Country for Old Men, and for acting in the James Bond film, Skyfall, for which he received both a BAFTA and a SAG nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Recently I and 24 other amazing bloggers had the chance to sit down and talk to Javier Bardem who portrayed the sinister and frightening “Captain Salazar” from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
Javier has played his fair share of strong and sometimes somewhat psychotic characters, what can rattle a man like that? Well, it seems like a group of mommy bloggers can! Our large group of moms took Javier by surprise as we loudly applauded his arrival. Javier was taken aback and seemed quite shocked, saying “Oh my God! I'm so scared right now! I thought it was just a woman or two, I'm a daddy so don't be too tough on me.” After we all laughed, we promised to take it easy on him. It was pretty funny, a great way to start the interview and break the ice.

We had some great questions and we were eager to get started. Have you ever wondered how much time it takes to transform into Captain Salizar, and what exactly is that black stuff oozing from his mouth? According to Javier, jokingly said that the makeup took “Way less than it takes to you all” Ha ha, he is a funny guy… But it all reality it took about three hours.

The effect of the black goo how was that like talking through and being in his mouth, what did it taste like?

“Monkey poo… They told me it was supposed to be like chocolate…. That taste was worse than that, I was supposed to put it on the teeth. I said give me that, so I drunk it and then I went to play the first scene, it starts to pour out of my mouth and he (Geoffrey Rush) was very disgusted. I thought it was like a rage pouring out. It's not blood. It's like the rage of the character coming out, something more physical, like a bull. I'd always thought the character was like a wounded bull…out of breath with a very strong idea for revenge

Three hours a day, I can’t even imagine! But as you can see from the film the makeup and the special effects are just amazing one the most mind blowing effects is the hair, it is like hair moving in water, flowing and going everywhere it looked so amazing. The commercials do not do it justice, see the effect on the big screen you will be amazed too.
With all that makeup on your face, was it difficult to difficult to portray the emotions through all of that makeup?

That was one of my concerns to see if my facial expression can go through the mask, but…once I had the mask on the face, I realized that I could express myself through it, which is important. Otherwise, your performance is killed by it”. “One of the things that these special effects people have done so well in this movie is that they brought magic into the performance without killing it, the hair, it's fantastic".
When you saw yourself after all the CGI was put in, in the finished project can you tell us about what that was like?

I was working a little bit on the darkness they showed me some pictures and videos and it was like yeah, right, looks great but how is it going to look like at the end? When I first saw the movie, having in mind that I was never on the sea. The whole movie was shot on studio, so I didn't see that ship, the sea for a second. Except for one scene on the beach but the rest was on the studio and when I saw the movie, it was like I'd been on the sea forever”.

What's it like working with Johnny Depp?

I met him in 1999 in Mexico in Vera Cruz doing a movie called "Before Night Falls" Johnny plays a drag queen “Bon-Bon”, I was in a trailer and I saw this beautiful blonde hair and I said I don't know you, but you've got a great butt. And since then, we've been good friends and he was a gentleman then. He was super nice, very caring, very funny, and don't give himself too much importance at all. In 2015, he was the same guy except that he's playing Jack Sparrow which is an iconic character”.

Ever wonder how Javier became involved with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales?

“I got involved back then, 2010, because Penelope (Cruz, his wife) was shooting "Pirates 4" I went to the set in Hawaii, and Los Angeles, and London. I was very jealous because I was seeing all this amazing production taking place, the water, the special effects, the boat, the sword fighting. I wanted to be one of those. I said to Jerry, Jerry please, give me a job. He called me five years after and I was so surprised and honored because as a movie goer, I love the franchise”.

I thought it was this great thing about one same character played in two ways, he's alive and it's all about pride and it's all about honor and when he's dead, which he's like it's all about betrayal and pain and revenge. I liked it. And it's a Disney movie. I think it's very powerful. It has some powerful moments, the movie itself”.

Javier Bardem was such a delight to talk to he was funny and had some great insight on the character. And his accent is was just dreamy! For playing such a frightening character in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales he was so much the opposite in real life, such a sweetheart. I personally loved the character, and the way Javier portrayed him, he was a great match to play Salizar. I hope they add the Captain Salazar character in some way to the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, perhaps in the fog at the beginning of the ride? That would be a great addition!

Stay tuned for some more great POTC interviews with the stars, including, Geoffrey Rush, Brenton Thwaites & Kaya Scodelario. I will also have an interview to share from the people who made this movie come to life, the Directors Joachim Ronning & Espen Sandberg These amazing interviews will be posted soon.

What a fun interview to read. I love hearing about what the actors think of a movie, and what they think of their characters. In this case, I find it more interesting than the movie itself. I love Disney and am glad that the Pirates series has been so successful for them.

Monkey Poo - LOL - that is not a "chocolate" taste I would want. Hopefully the after taste didn't last too long!
