We like food and when we were given the
chance to do the Philly Food Tour we jumped all over it! Manayunk is only a short ride up 76 from
our house and we were there in 20 minutes, we've been to Manayunk a
few times but we never really walked around and took in the sights
and this tour gave us the opportunity to see things we never saw.
We met our group in front of Marchiano's Bakery after introducing ourselves to the group (we were the only natives to the group) we sampled a slice of Marchiano's red pie. Red pie is something every South Philadelphian has had and we were eager to try another bakery's twist on something we've eaten a bunch of times.
The red pie is called this because there is no cheese, just sauce (we call it gravy around these parts) and the other twist is it's served room temperature not hot and that makes a big difference.
The gravy really shines at room temperature, and this gravy was delicious. My daughter inhaled her slice, I mean she almost swallowed it whole! This was a big hit with the three of us.
From Marchiano's we took a stroll down
by the hand dug canal and after getting a brief history of the area
and housing we enjoyed a pretzel from Tasty Twisters. Philadelphia
and pretzels go together like peanut butter and jelly. We consume
about 20 pounds of pretzels a year, that is double what the average
American eats in these doughy treats. We enjoyed our pretzels but my
husband complained that he needed mustard, I agree a soft pretzel is
soooo much better with mustard.
From the canal we moved onto
Sorrentino's Deli for a cheesesteak, the sandwich we're famous for.
Truth be told we're lucky if we eat one cheesesteak a year, it's not
that we don't like them it's just that we've been focusing on eating
healthier. So this really was a treat for us since we don't normally
eat them and again being from South Philly we're surrounded by all
the places known for cheesesteaks, so we were excited to try one from
a new place. Sorrentino's made their cheesesteak with provolone
cheese, this is a cheese we normally don't get on our steaks when we
get them we like whiz and my husband prefers his “wit”.
Whiz-wit for those of you who don't speak Philly is a steak with Cheese Whiz and fried onions. If you want to sound like you belong while visiting here order your steak like that and you'll blend in. The steak was delicious, the meat, the cheese and the roll all worked together in a wonderfully tasty treat. Only issue was we didn't have more to snack on! No worries we'd be eating more food soon enough.

Next stop was Angelo & Josephine's
for a pork sandwich with broccoli rabe. Broccoli rabe is a more
bitter version of broccoli, it's an acquired taste and seems to be an
either love it or hate it kind of thing. I hate it and my husband
loves it and our daughter was too stuffed to even give an opinion!
The sandwich short of the broccoli was delicious and if you ask my husband he would say the same thing except the broccoli rabe was the best he's ever had. It wasn't overly salty or bitter like most places make it, Angelo & Josephine's broccoli rabe was off the charts according to him.
Even though she was stuffed and couldn't bear to eat another thing when the mini cannoli's made their way out our daughter was able to find some room in her belly for this deliciously delicate pastry. Everyone here has their spot for cannoli's you ask 10 people and you'll get 10 different answers but everyone has their spot. A spot we'd pick for our spot is Angelo & Josephine's. This cannoli was perfect, simply perfect. The shell had a hint of cinnamon which we love and the cream was the right balance of sweetness. That was an awesome cannoli.

I'd like to say we walked to our next
destination but it was more like waddled to our next destination.
Volo's coffee house where we enjoyed cappuccino's and our daughter
had a hot chocolate. I wish I had saved my cannoli to have with my
cup of cappuccino! It was a nice treat and the hot chocolate was a
huge hit with our daughter, she felt special because her order was
called ahead.
Our last stop was Sweet Elizabeth's for
a cupcake. I'll tell you how good the red velvet cupcake was by
letting you know we left Sweet Elizabeth's with a few more cupcakes
for the road. These things should be illegal. Words can not express
my love for these cupcakes. I'm just glad there not close enough for
me to go there everyday!
We had a fun Saturday, the weather was
perfect our tour guide Alyse was great she knew the history of the
shops we visited and of Manayunk itself. We couldn't have asked for a
better time. If you're visiting the area or a local and are looking
for something interesting to do on a weekend this tour is for you.

everything!
Hi Susan! This tour looks awesome. I love to eat! Ha! When I visited the Chew Philly site I learned that they donate a portion of all sales to Philabundance. This is important to me. I am using my blog, Couponing 4 a Difference, to earn money to donate to the Food Bank of South Jersey. I love that they do this!

I like that they donate a portion of the sales to Philadbundance! Cool!
I would love to attend one of these tours if I were closer to Philly.
I like that they support local Philadelphia small businesses. And on the tour you also learn about local history, architecture, ect. So it's not all about food!
