For the better part of my entire life one thing was sure at
some point during the summer I would wind up in Wildwood, NJ and would be
spending time on the boardwalk having fun in the summer sun. From the rides to
the Tram Car and Curley’s fries these are things that have been a part of my
life from jump.
And they’re now a part of my daughter’s life as she’s hooked on
the boardwalk the way I was and the way my husband was when we were her age.
And this past weekend we were in Wildwood and had the chance to do something we
haven’t had the chance to do in a while and that was to really be able to enjoy
Surfside Pier and Mariner’s Landing.
It’s amazing how quickly memories come flooding back when
you see all the rides and how I still get that excited feeling that I did when
I was a kid and having my daughter added to the level of our excitement because
the last time we rode rides she was a little squirt and could only do the
kiddie rides now she’s no longer a runt and can do some of the better rides.
We hit all of my favorites such as the Giant Wheel, the
Music Express (which my daughter fell in love with), and the Teacups. And we
waited for my husband when he rode Riptide he loves these type of rides which
are usually Viking and or Pirate ship themes but the boat on Riptide is based
on a Wildwood lifeguard boat, still it’s a ride my stomach can’t take and my
daughter is just like me so we waited while my husband went on it and he came
off smiling he loved Riptide, he also loves the feeling of his stomach in his
throat!
And when she had her fill of the
bigger rides our daughter wanted to still do some of the kiddie rides and that
made me smile knowing my little girl is still little.
These are piers that we’ve been coming to for over 30 years,
my husband still talks about the good times he had as a teenage with his
friends spending all day at Raging Waters even though they were only able to be
there for a few hours and how they would manage to hid their arms when it was
time for their wristband color was due to leave so they could just keep
enjoying the slides. The smell of chlorine and French fries might sound like an
odd combo but to anyone who grew up going to Wildwood it’s a smell that brings
you back in time.
Our Saturday was long and tiring but we really enjoyed our
day and wrapped it up with a ride on the tram car and for once it was nice when
hearing “watch the tram car, please” to not have to move out of the way since
we were passengers. Just being able to sit and enjoy the sights without having
to walk is so nice and relaxing. Our Saturday was spent as a family having a
good time doing something we did as kids with our families and I’m glad to be
able to pass along this tradition with our daughter who keeps asking when we’re
going back! It’s in our blood and as long as there is a Morey’s Pier we’ll be
there.
