The founder of Kidlandia, illustrator and entrepreneur Brian Backus, has been living in a fantasy world of maps and monsters since he was a very little boy.

Kidlandia grew out of Brian’s 2004 concept to create personalized maps of imaginary kingdoms for children’s rooms. He believed that by providing children their own kingdoms, with friendly monsters as companions, kids would gain an increased sense of confidence, control, and self-worth. In addition, by naming the cities, islands, and other features of the kingdoms after family and friends, kids would feel more connected to those who love them. Brian, who produced educational multimedia titles for Disney and Voyager, was also intrigued by the idea that by engaging kids in namesake kingdoms, he could motivate them to understand maps, and accelerate reading skills.

Kidladia gives you the opportunity to make personalized puzzles, maps, canvas door hanging maps. At Kidlandia they have some of your children's favorite characters too, Spongebob, Dora the Explorer, The Disney Princesses, Veggietales and more, along with their own little critter they are called Kreatures.


I was lucky enough to have my daughter review the Map Placemats, the USA Placemat and the World Placemat.

My review:

My daughter is in kindergarten and she’s getting good grades. We like to work with her and teach her things to try and keep her ahead of the class. One of the things we were attempting to teach her are her states. It’s a chore; she looks at the map and just shut’s us out. I received a map placemat from Kidlandia (http://www.kidlandia.com/default.aspx) and it’s made for kids, it’s not just a boring map it’s a map that’s visually appealing and stimulating to a kid with a short attention span. My daughter saw her name printed on it and was instantly impressed. And the fact that it’s a placemat means she can learn while eating and not even really know she’s learning.

This is a nice map; it’s colorful and best of all it’s laminated! Even my bulldozer of a little princess can’t wreck this map. And the greatest thing of all is that in only a few days of having this map she can name all the States from Pennsylvania to Illinois, we’re taking our time going across country, hopefully we won’t lose Dinky or Aunt Edna along the way. Vacation references aside this map has helped us do something we had trouble doing only a week ago, that alone is worth the cost of the map.
